Tumhe ho na ho

Tumhe ho na ho, mujhko to
Tumhe ho na ho, mujhko to itna yakeen hain
Mujhe pyaar tumse nahin hain, nahin hain
Mujhe pyaar tumse nahin hain, nahin hain
Tumhe ho na ho, mujhko to itna yakeen hain

Mujhe pyaar tumse nahin hain, nahin hain
Magar main ne yeh raaz ab tak na jaana
Ki kyun pyaari lagti hain baatein tumhaari
Main kyun tumse milne ka dhundhu bahaana
Kabhi maine chaaha tumhe chhu ke dekhun
Kabhi maine chaaha tumhe paas laana
Magar phir bhi
Magar phir bhi iss baat ka to yakeen hain
Mujhe pyaar tumse nahin hain, nahin hain
Mujhe pyaar tumse nahin hain, nahin hain
Tumhe ho na ho, mujhko to itna yakeen hain

Phir bhi jo tum dur rehte ho mujhse
Toh rehte hain dil pe udaasi ke saaye
Phir bhi jo tum dur rehte ho mujhse
Toh rehte hain dil pe udaasi ke saaye
Koi khwaab oonche makaanon se jhaanke
Koi khwaab baithha rahe sar jhukaaye
Kabhi dil ki raahon mein failey andhera
Kabhi dur tak roshni muskuraaye
Magar phir bhi
Magar phir bhi iss baat ka to yakeen hain
Mujhe pyaar tumse nahin hain, nahin hain
Mujhe pyaar tumse nahin hain, nahin hain
Tumhe ho na ho, mujhko to itna yakeen hain

Movie: Gharonda (1977)

Music Composer: Jaidev

In a movie where Gulzar is credited for screenplay, narration and lyrics, this song is, surprisingly, penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri. Apparently, the song is often wrongly attributed to Gulzar. There is a certain Gulzar style to the anthropomorphism of dreams, peeking out of tall homes or sitting dejected. But apparently, this is a Naqsh Lyallpuri song, and the movie’s other songs, ‘Do deewane’ and ‘Ek akela’ are Gulzar’s.
I really like this ‘I-do-not-love-you’ declaration of love. There is a fondness conveyed in the lyrics that is charming. And Runa Laila’s voice is lovely. This is a song that makes me smile, so I am sharing it today, hoping someone reading this will also find it smile-inducing. ~ R
