Naina barse rim jhim rim jhim

Naina barse, rim jhim, rim jhim

Naina barse, rim jhim, rim jhim
Piya tore aawan ki aas
Naina barse, rim jhim, rim jhim
Naina barse, barse, barse

Woh din meri nigaahon mein, woh yaadein meri aahon mein
Woh din meri nigaahon mein, woh yaadein meri aahon mein
Yeh dil ab tak bhatakta hain, teri ulfat ki raahon mein
Sooni sooni raahen, sehmi sehmi baahein
Aankhon mein hain barson ki pyaas

Naina barse, rim jhim, rim jhim
Naina barse, barse, barse

Nazar tujh bin machalti hain, mohabbat haath malti hain
Nazar tujh bin machalti hain, mohabbat haath malti hain
Chala aa mere parwaane, wafa ki shamma jalti hain
O mere humraahi, phirti hoon ghabaraayi
Jahaan bhi hain aaja mere paas

Naina barse, rim jhim, rim jhim
Naina barse, barse, barse

Adhura hoon main afsaana, jo yaad aaon chale aana
Mera jo haal hain tujh bin woh aakar dekh ke jaana
Bheegi bheegi palkein, chham chham aansoo chhalkein
Khoyi khoyi aankhen hain udaas

Naina barse, rim jhim, rim jhim
Naina barse, barse, barse

Yeh laakhon gham yeh tanhaayi, mohabbat ki yeh ruswaayi
Yeh laakhon gham yeh tanhaayi, mohabbat ki yeh ruswaayi
Kati aisi kayi raatein, na tum aaye na maut aayi
Yeh bindiya ka taara, jaise ho angaara
Mehendi mere haathon ki udaas

Naina barse, rim jhim, rim jhim
Piya tore aawan ki aas
Naina barse, rim jhim, rim jhim
Naina barse, barse, barse

Movie: Woh Kaun Thi (1964)
Director: Raj Khosla
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Lyricist: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
Music Composer: Madan Mohan

Searching for a usable video of this song was an exercise. Nothing on YouTube that could be shared on another site. And the DailyMotion videos were all edited rather subjectively since the song is actually sung in 2-3 bits throughout the movie. So, the lyrics here follow the audio track and not the video.

So much for the practical bits.

Now for the romantic bits: Lata Mangeshkar’s voice and Madan Mohan’s music! What a fantastic combination! Both of Lata Mangeshkar’s songs in this movie are beautifully rendered and among the few of her songs that I have to stop everything to listen. Madan Mohan was nominated for best music director for this movie and with gems like this one and Lag ja gale, it makes absolute sense. But Laxmikant Pyarelal had Dosti the same year, and Madan Mohan didn’t win. (It’s difficult to believe Madan Mohan never won an award for his music in his lifetime!) But the longevity of this soundtrack is probably a testament to its popularity. ~ R
