Chhoti si kahani se

Chhoti si kahani se, baarishon ke paani se
Saari waadi bhar gayi
Chhoti si kahani se, baarishon ke paani se
Saari waadi bhar gayi,
Na jaane kyun, dil bhar gaya
Na jaane kyun, aankh bhar gayi

Shaakhon pe patte the, patton pe boondein thi
Boondon mein paani tha, paani mein aansoo the
Shaakhon pe patte the, patton pe boondein thi
Boondon mein paani tha, paani mein aansoo the
Chhoti si kahani se, baarishon ke paani se
Saari waadi bhar gayi,
Na jaane kyun, dil bhar gaya
Na jaane kyun, aankh bhar gayi

Dil mein gile bhi the, pehle mile bhi the
Mil ke paraaye the, do humsaaye the
Dil mein gile bhi the, pehle mile bhi the
Mil ke paraaye the, do humsaaye the
Chhoti si kahani se, baarishon ke paani se
Saari waadi bhar gayi,
Na jaane kyun, dil bhar gaya
Na jaane kyun, aankh bhar gayi

Rukti hai thamti hai, kabhi barasti hai
Baadal pe paanv rakh ke baarish machalati hai
Rukti hain thamti hai, kabhi barasti hai
Baadal pe paanv rakh ke baarish machalati hai
Chhoti si kahani se, baarishon ke paani se
Saari waadi bhar gayi,
Chhoti si kahani se, baarishon ke paani se
Saari waadi bhar gayi,
Na jaane kyun, dil bhar gaya
Na jaane kyun, aankh bhar gayi

Movie: Ijaazat (1987)
Director: Gulzar
Singer: Asha Bhosle
Lyricist: Gulzar
Music Composer: R D Burman

Get me onto a Gulzar playlist and then it’s difficult to wean me off it! Which is how this week’s pick comes about.

Mera Kuch Saaman appropriated all the musical glory of Ijaazat, but I honestly love all the songs in this movie. This number actually plays as the opening credits roll and leads beautifully into the opening sequence of the movie. (It’s also why finding a video with all the verses of the song is so difficult. There is this lovely audio version on YouTube though that you could check out.)

I wanted to include a song on the monsoon before the season ended. This might not be a typical monsoon song, but it wonderfully evokes both rainy days of the past as well as nostalgia for a time gone by and the inexplicable ache that past events sometimes leave us with. And the picturisation offers a lovely view of rain in the mountains. ~ R
