Gagan yeh samjhe chaand sukhi hain

Gagan yeh samjhe chaand sukhi hain, chanda kahe sitaare
Gagan yeh samjhe chaand sukhi hain, chanda kahe sitaare
Dariya ki lehre yeh samjhe hum se sukhi kinaare
O saathi dukh mein hi sukh hain chhipa re
O saathi dukh mein hi sukh hain chhipa re
Bhaiya re, saathi re, Bhaiya re, ho saathi re

Door ke parbat door hi rehkar lagte sab ko suhaane
Paas agar jaakar dekhe toh patthar ki chattaane
Door ke parbat door hi rehkar lagte sab ko suhaane
Paas agar jaakar dekhe toh patthar ki chattaane
Kaliyaa samjhe chaman sukhi hain, chaman kahe re bahare
O saathi dukh mein hi sukh hain chhipa re
O saathi dukh mein hi sukh hain chhipa re
Bhaiya re, saathi re, Bhaiya re, o saathi re

Ho…
Hey rama ho hey rama
Raat andheri hey rama,
Raat andheri soche mann mein hain din mein ujiyaaraa
Din ki garmi soch rahi hain, hain sheetal andhiyara
O sathi, hain sheetal andhiyara
Raat andheri soche mann mein hain din mein ujiyaaraa
Din ki garmi soch rahi hain, hain sheetal andhiyara
O sathi, hain sheetal andhiyara
Pattjhad samjhe sukhi hain sawan, sawan kahe angaare
O saathi dukh mein hi sukh hain chhipa re

O saathi re, bandhu re, saathi re, bandhu re

Nirdhan dhan ki chaah ko lekar phirta maara maara
Dhan vaalon ko chain nahin, yeh kaisi jag ki dhaara
Ik dujhe ko sukhi samajhte, sukh ko sabhi pukaare
O saathi tujh mein hi sukh hain chhipa re
O saathi tujh mein hi such hain chhipa re

Movie: Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979)
Director: Kanak Mishra
Singer: Jaspal Singh
Lyricist: Madan Bharti
Music Composer: Raj Kamal

I was listening to a Yesudas playlist and ‘Chand jaise mukhde pe’ came on. I was surprised to find that the movie was Sawan Ko Aane Do. For some reason, I had always believed that this was a song from an Amol Palekar movie, maybe Chitchor. Anyway, that led to an investigation of the movie. The central protagonist is a singer and all except 3 of the 10 songs are sung by Yesudas. (I am surprised all the songs aren’t sung by the same male singer, because the voice and the accents are rather varied to belong to the same person, here Arun Govil.) That in itself was surprising, since Yesudas’ voice though lovely has a pronounced South Indian accent which limited his opportunities in Hindi playback singing. But what was even more amazing was that the songs in the movie seem to have been penned by eight different lyricists, most of whom I have not heard of!
Anyway, this (slightly) deep dive led to the discovery of today’s song. I hadn’t heard it before but its lyrics seemed like a serendipitous message from the universe! I’ve had a few minor troubles lately, but their coming one after the other seemed overwhelming, and I did get to that nasty point in my brooding where everyone else was joyous 24*7, while I was cursed. Cue eye roll! This song seemed like a bit of a slap in the face and a reminder of something I knew but seemed to have forgotten temporarily. Also, long before self-improvement gurus became a thing, here is a little-known Hindi lyricist reminding us that happiness is within us and not outside! The song’s lyrics are really what caught my attention. Again, the singer Jaspal Singh is someone I haven’t heard of. I am not sure how I feel about his voice or about the music, but the lyrics appeal to me in my current frame of mind. ~ R
PS: I couldn’t find a share-able video of the song that had all the verses.
