Turns out, I am still in a hopeful mood. Hope for a better year definitely and hope that I will be a better person and learn from past mistakes. In that frame of mind, this song seems apt somehow: victory over self before others, definitely. Gulzar’s lyrics rendered on the screen as a school assembly scene also seem to echo that hope with so much untapped potential in those bright and eager faces.

Guddi was a fun film and Jaya Bhaduri, who was making her debut in the film, was the life of it. The film offered a look at aspects of the film industry that many film goers wouldn’t have been privy to at the time. And it has a bevy of stars all appearing as themselves. The premise of the film was also interesting and the whole movie is an enjoyable watch.

Vani Jairam has sung all the songs in this film. I am not a fan of her voice but both ‘Bole re papihara’ and this one became quite popular. Music director Vasant Desai of ‘Ae malik tere bande hum’ fame gave Vani her Hindi film break with Guddi. So, at least two women making their debut of sorts with Guddi. One could read it as reinforcing the message of potential that the song seems to offer. ~ R
