Tum jo mil gaye ho

Tum jo mil gaye ho, toh yeh lagta hai
Ke jahan mil gaya
Ke jahan mil gaya
Ek bhatke huye rahi ko, caravan mil gaya
Tum jo mil gaye ho, toh yeh lagta hai

Meri kya khata hai, hota hai yeh bhi
Ke zameen se bhi kabhi aasman mil gaya
Ke jahan mil gaya

Tum jo mil gaye ho, toh yeh lagta hai
Ke jahan mil gaya
Ke jahan mil gaya

Tum bhi the khoye khoye, main bhi bujha bujha
Tum bhi the khoye khoye, main bhi bujha bujha
Tha ajnabi zamana, apna koyi na tha
Tha ajnabi zamana, apna koyi na tha
Dil ko jo mil gaya hai tera sahara
Ek nayi zindagi ka nishan mil gaya

Tum jo mil gaye ho, toh yeh lagta hai
Ke jahan mil gaya
Ek bhatke huye rahi ko, caravan mil gaya
Tum jo mil gaye ho, toh yeh lagta hai
Ke jahan mil gaya
Ke jahan mil gaya

Movie: Hanste Zakhm (1973)
Director: Chetan Anand
Singer(s): Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi
Lyricist: Kaifi Azmi
Music composer: Madan Mohan
A typical 1970s style song, Tum jo mil gaye ho, is quite popular. Madan Mohan was trying to adjust to the new sensibilities of the 70s by creating a westernized tune quite unlike his usual ghazal-style songs. The song did not please his fans when it was first released.
It shows Navin Nischol driving a taxi with Priya Rajvansh as his passenger. In true Bollywood style, he breaks into song and woos her. And, she ends up in the front seat and even sings a few lines.
Despite the tacky picturisation, the song soothes me. I remember drifting off to sleep listening to this song on radio, never caring who it was picturized on and what its background was. It still evokes that lazy, sleepy feeling in me.
Although it was initially sung as a solo by Mohammed Rafi, Madan Mohab wanted a few lines in a female voice. This was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and added later. Kaifi Azmi’s simple lyrics suit the situation. ~ S
