Raahi manwa

Dukh ho ya sukh
Jab sadaa sang rahe na koi
Phir dukh ko apanaiye
Ke jaaye toh dukh na hoye

Raahi manwa dukh ki chinta
Kyun sataati hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain

Raahi manwa dukh ki chinta
Kyun sataati hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain
Sukh hain ek chaav dhalti,
Aati hain, jaati hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain
Raahi manwa dukh ki chinta
Kyun sataati hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain

Door hain manzil door sahi
Pyaar humara kya kam hain
Pug mein kaante laakh sahi
Par yeh sahaara kya kam hain
Humraah tere koi apna toh hain
Humraah tere koi apna toh hain
Sukh hain ek chaav dhalti,
Aati hain, jaati hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain

Raahi manwa dukh ki chinta
Kyun sataati hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain

Dukh ho koi tab jaltey hain
Path ke deep nigaahon mein
Itni badi iss duniya ki
Lambi akeli raahon mein
Humraah tera koi apna toh hain
Humraah tera koi apna toh hain
Sukh hain ek chaav dhalti,
Aati hain, jaati hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain

Raahi manwa dukh ki chinta
Kyun sataati hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain
Dukh toh apna saathi hain

Movie: Dosti (1964)
Director: Satyen Bose
Singer: Mohammed Rafi
Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri
Music Composer: Laxmikant Pyarelal
I like the idea of this song. Why fear sorrow? It is a constant companion. Happiness may come and go but sorrow stays and if you accept this fact, life becomes easier. I don’t know. Maybe it is not a great idea but imagine not being afraid of sorrow, imagine considering it a mainstay and acknowledging that happiness might well be fleeting. Poor health, grief, money worries, emotional problems all have the capacity to bog us down but if we take it in our stride and instead think of happiness as an unlooked for bonus, life can be easier to bear. And another rather poignant line is ‘Par yeh sahaara kya kam hain, Humraah tere koi apna toh hain.’ No human is an island and friends and family help lighten the load, undoubtedly. And there is the strength and comfort that comes from knowing you are not alone.

Dosti was a runaway hit when it was released and the songs probably more so. This one in Mohammad Rafi’s voice is a lovely listen. ~ R
