Oui ma oui ma yeh kya ho gaya

Oui ma oui ma yeh kya ho gaya
Unki galli mein dil kho gaya
Bindiya ho toh dhoondh bhi loo main
Dil na dhoondha jaaye
Oui ma oui ma yeh kya ho gaya
Unki galli mein dil kho gaya
Bindiya ho toh dhoondh bhi loo main
Dil na dhoondha jaaye
Arre dil na dhoondha jaaye

Ek din ki baat hain, nadiya kinaare,
Unse hue thhe chhup-chhup ishaaren
Ek din ki baat hain, nadiya kinaare,
Unse hue thhe chhup-chhup ishaaren
Kasam kha chuki thi main pyaar na karoongi
Main pyaar ka kabhi bhi ikraar na karoongi
Ab woh baatein aye yaad
Dar hain ho na jaaon barbaad
Sheesha ho toh todh bhi daaloon
Dil na toda jaaye

Oui ma oui ma yeh kya ho gaya
Unki galli mein dil kho gaya
Bindiya ho toh dhoondh bhi loo main
Dil na dhoondha jaaye
Oui ma dil na dhoondha jaaye

Pyaar ke raste piya bade oonche-neeche
Aaon main bol kaise tere peechhe-peechhe
Pyaar ke raste piya bade oonche-neeche
Aaon main bol kaise tere peechhe-peechhe
Na thess lag jaaye, ghunghat gir jaaye
Ghunghat jo sambhaloon toh latt khul jaaye
Mushkil mein hain meri jaan
Tu kya samjhe o naadaan
Duniya ho toh chhod bhi doon main
Pyaar na chhoda jaaye

Oui ma oui ma yeh kya ho gaya
Unki galli mein dil kho gaya
Bindiya ho toh dhoondh bhi loo main
Dil na dhoondha jaaye
Oui ma oui ma yeh kya ho gaya
Unki galli mein dil kho gaya
Bindiya ho toh dhoondh bhi loo main
Dil na dhoondha jaaye
Oui ma dil na dhoondha jaaye

Movie: Parasmani (1963)
Director: Babubhai Mistri
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Lyricist: Faruk Kaiser
Music Composer: Laxmikant Pyarelal
There are so many lyricists that we know so little about. For instance, all I could learn about lyricist Faruk Kaiser came from one Wikipedia entry. And this is despite the fact that this Urdu poet worked as a lyricist, assistant director, and dialogue/script writer from the 1950s to the 1980s. His more than 390 songs have featured actors from Mahipal to Govinda!

There is a great range in Kaiser’s work. From ‘Sari sari raat teri yaad sataye’ in 1958’s Aji Bas Shukriya to ‘Auva auva – koi yahaan aha naache naache’ in Disco Dancer in 1982. I particularly love some of his early work, which had great music as well. For my choice today to commemorate Kaiser’s death anniversary (10 November 1987), I was torn between two numbers, both of which feature the lovely Helen. There was Shikari’s ‘Tumko piya dil diya’ and Parasmani’s ‘Oui ma oui ma yeh kya ho gaya’. Parasmani’s ‘Hasta hua noorani chehra’ was another contender. In the end I went with the song picturized on Helen alone, because she looks lovely, dances charmingly and Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music renders this song delightfully hummable.

Of course, as seems to be the case, Kaiser’s name is spelt Farooq Qaisar in the song credits on YouTube. I found many places where this song is attributed to him but the Wikipedia page for Parasmani attributes the movie’s lyrics to Asad Bhopali. I hope I am not doing Bhopali an injustice and am rightfully commemorating Kaiser. ~ R
