An oft-repeated tale of love—of finding someone to love, having that love reciprocated, and then separating—told in a few beautiful verses. That sums up this song from the movie Nikaah. The songs of this movie were all hits, which made the lyricist Hasan Kamaal immensely popular.
Kamaal is a prominent Urdu poet born in Lucknow. After graduating from the Lucknow University, he went on to become a sub-editor at the Blitz Weekly. Later on, he became the editor of Urdu Blitz. He is also a regular columnist at many publications. His columns are often translated into other languages.
After debuting as a lyricist in Nikaah, he wrote lyrics for many other 1980s films, such as Tawaif. He received the Filmfare award for the lyrics of the movie Aaj Ki Aawaz.
I chose this song to celebrate his talent because Salma Agha’s voice adds an otherworldly quality to it. She won the Filmfare Award for the best female playback singer for this song. ~ S
