Tum bin jeevan kaise beeta
Poochho mere dil se, poochho mere dil se
Tum bin jeevan kaise beeta
Poochho mere dil se, poochho mere dil se
Poochho mere dil se, haay poochho mere dil se
Saawan ke din aaye, beeti yaaden laaye
Kaun jhukaakar aankhen, mujhko paas bithaaye
Kaisa tha pyaara roop tumhaara,
Poochho mere dil se, poochho mere dil se
Tum bin jeevan kaise beeta,
Poochho mere dil se, haay poochho mere dil se
Prem ka saagar haay, chaaron taraf lahraaye
Jitnaa aage jaaoon, gehra hotaa jaaye
Gham ke bhanwar mein, kyaa kyaa doobaa,
Poochho mere dil se, poochho mere dil se
Tum bin jeevan kaise beeta,
Poochho mere dil se, haay poochho mere dil se
Jaise jugnoo ban mein, tu chamke ansuan mein
Bankar phool khili ho, jaane kis bagiyan mein
Main apni kismat pe roya,
Poochho mere dil se, haay poochho mere dil se
Tum bin jeevan kaise beeta,
Poochho mere dil se, haay poochho mere dil se
Movie: Anita (1967)
Director: Raj Khosla
Singer: Mukesh
Lyricist: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
Music Composer: Laxmikant Pyarelal
Born in the Jhelum district of Pakistan, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan started working as a writer at the All India Radio (AIR), Delhi. The contacts he made at the AIR helped him get a chance to write the dialogues and to act in the film Aath Din. He then wrote lyrics for the film Do Bhai, which were greatly lauded.
Mehdi Ali chose to remain in India instead of migrating to Pakistan. He worked with all the great music composers of the time. We have featured many songs of his, such as those from films Mera Saaya and Anpadh.
This song from Anita, composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal, is picturised on Manoj Kumar and Sadhana. I am not a fan of either but the song is shot at the temple/ashram Hanuman Garhi in Nainital, which looks wonderful. Mukesh is at his mournful best, which seemed befitting to remember the lyricist on his death anniversary (July 29). ~ S
