Shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye

Shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye phoolon ka shabaab
Uss mein phir milaai jaaye thodisi sharaab
Hoga yun nasha jo taiyyaar
Haan, hoga yun nasha jo taiyyaar
Woh pyaar hain

Shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye phoolon ka shabaab
Uss mein phir milaai jaaye thodisi sharaab
Hoga yun nasha jo taiyyaar
Woh pyaar hain
Shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye phoolon ka shabaab

Hasta hua bachpan woh behka hua mausam hain
Chhedo to ek shola hain, chhoo lo toh bas shabnam hain
Hasta hua bachpan woh behka hua mausam hain
Chhedo to ek shola hain, chhoo lo toh bas shabnam hain
Gaon mein, mele mein, raah mein, akele mein
Aata jo yaad baar baar, woh pyaar hain

Shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye phoolon ka shabaab
Uss mein phir milaai jaaye thodisi sharaab
Hoga yun nasha jo taiyyaar
Woh pyaar hain
Shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye phoolon ka shabaab

Rang mein pighle sona, ang se yun ras chhalke
Jaise baje dhun koi, raat mein halke halke
Rang mein pighle sona, ang se yun ras chhalke
Jaise baje dhun koi, raat mein halke halke
Dhoop mein chhaav mein, jhoomati hawaaon mein
Hardam kare jo intezaar, woh pyaar hain

Shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye phoolon ka shabaab
Uss mein phir milaai jaaye thodisi sharaab
O, hoga yun nasha jo taiyyaar
Woh pyaar hain

Yaad agar woh aaye
Ho, yaad agar woh aaye aise katey tanhaayi
Yaad agar woh aaye aise katey tanhaayi
Soone shehar mein jaise bajne lage shehnaai
Aana ho, jaana ho, kaisa bhi zamaana ho
Utare kabhi na jo khumaar, woh pyaar hain

Shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye phoolon ka shabaab
Uss mein phir milaai jaaye thodisi sharaab
Hoga yun nasha jo taiyyaar
Woh pyaar hain
Shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye phoolon ka shabaab

Movie: Prem Pujari (1970)
Director: Dev Anand
Singers: Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar
Lyricist: Neeraj
Music Composer: S D Burman
19 July marks two years since the death of lyricist Gopaldas Neeraj. Popularly known as Neeraj, this professor of Hindi Literature put himself through college by working odd jobs. When Dev Anand heard his poetry, he was charmed and invited him to work in films.  When I was scouting for a Neeraj song to feature on the blog for today, I realized that most of the popular numbers of this Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan recipient are already on the site: “Likhe jo khat tujhe”, “Khilte hain gul yahan”. Shows you that we already love Neeraj poetry!

The song I finally landed on for today is from the movie Prem Pujari. Ironically, this Dev Anand helmed film didn’t do well at the box office at the time, but its soundtrack lives on, thanks to some wonderful music, beautiful lyrics and melodious singing. Neeraj worked with many big-name composers of his time but apparently had particular admiration for S D Burman. I am not a fan of the picturization of this song, but I can listen to it on loop. Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar sound so good, especially Kishoreda and Burman dada’s music is so playful with a touch of yearning. As many point out, Neeraj’s lyrics were very hummable and this is one of those numbers. So, sing along and remember the poet Neeraj!  ~ R
