O, neend na mujh ko aaye, dil mera ghabraaye
Chhup ke chhup ke koi aake, soya pyaar jagaaye
O, neend na mujh ko aaye, dil mera ghabraaye
Chhup ke chhup ke koi aake, soya pyaar jagaaye
O, neend na mujh ko aaye
Soya hua sansaar hain, soya hua sansaar
Soya hua sansaar hain, soya hua sansaar
Main jaagoo yahan, tu jaage wahan, ek dil mein dard dabaaye
O, neend na mujh ko aaye, dil mera ghabraaye
Chhup ke chhup ke koi aake, soya pyaar jagaaye
O, neend na mujh ko aaye
Ik beech mein deewar hain, ik beech mein deewaar
Ik beech mein deewar hain, ik beech mein deewaar
Main tadpu yahan, tu tadpe wahan, hai, chayn jiya nahin paaye
O, neend na mujh ko aaye, dil mera ghabraaye
Chhup ke chhup ke koi aake, soya pyaar jagaaye
O, neend na mujh ko aaye
Main hoon yahan bekaraar re, tu hain wahan bekaraar
Main hoon yahan bekaraar re, tu hain wahan bekaraar
Mai gaoo yahan, tu gaaye wahan, hey, dil ko dil behlaaye
O, neend na mujh ko aaye, dil mera ghabraaye
Chhup ke chhup ke koi aake, soya pyaar jagaaye
O, neend na mujh ko aaye

So, I must confess yet again to my ignorance. I did not know of P L Santoshi although his son is a (kind of) contemporary director, Rajkumar Santoshi of Ghayal and Damini fame.
If we were not commemorating lyricists this year, I doubt I would have known of P L Santoshi. His work belongs to an era of Hindi film history I have not explored much. The 60s to the 80s is more my kind of jam although some 50s numbers do make their way to my playlist. Santoshi started work in the late 40s and continued into the 60s, but he was a man who wore many hats and so his credit as lyricist is only for 9 movies. However, he wrote dialogues for 14 films and directed 21 (of which the most famous probably was the Madhubala-Bharat Bhushan starrer Barsaat ki Raat).
Although his body of work as a lyricist is not very large, it includes fun numbers like ‘Aana meri jaan, meri jaan, Sunday ke Sunday’ (Shehnai, 1947) which was adopted by the National Egg Coordination Committee to encourage egg consumption (Khana meri jaan ande hi ande) and became quite the ear worm. The song featured today was also reimagined, for the 2015 movie Shaandaar, featuring a pair of insomniacs. The original version is more about the temporary insomnia of young love and is beautifully rendered by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The music is credited to Kalyanji, so this was probably before the famous brothers worked together or one of their individual forays. There is so little information available on Santoshi on the net that it’s not clear when his birthday is or when he passed away. So, taking a break from commemorating a special day, we are celebrating the man who also made Raj Kapoor dance on screen to ‘Main hoon ek khalasi, mera naam hain Bhim Palasi’. ~ R
