June 6 was the birth anniversary of Rajinder Krishan Duggal although his last name was usually dropped in mentions. There are different spellings of his name on the Internet but I used the one his son, Rajesh Duggal, provided in a reply to a blog post. A prolific lyricist, Rajinder Krishan, is not as well-known today as some of his peers. In fact, the YouTube link for today’s song credits Anand Bakshi as its lyricist! Apparently, Rajinder Krishan liked to keep out of the limelight and made headlines only when he won a jackpot at the races.

His repertoire is amazing. It spans ‘Meri pyaari Bindu’ from Padosan to the beauty featured here today. There are a number of songs of his that I like including ‘Chup chup khade ho’, ‘Woh bhooli dastaan’, the Padosan songs and so many more. Why I chose this is because, and this is a little embarrassing to admit, I hadn’t heard this one before. So, I heard it and really liked it. “Murjha chuka hain phir bhi yeh dil phool hi toh hain”. There is such pain in these lines of blighted love and the song is beautifully rendered by Lata Mangeshkar. Remembering Rajinder Krishan on his birthday and looking forward to discovering more of his gems.  ~ R
