Ya dil ki suno

Ya dil ki suno duniyawaalon
Ya mujh ko abhi chup rehne do
Main gham ko khushi kaise keh doon
Jo kehte hain unko kehne do

Ya dil ki suno duniyawaalon
Ya mujh ko abhi chup rehne do
Main gham ko khushi kaise keh doon
Jo kehte hain unko kehne do
Ya dil ki suno duniyawaalon

Ye phool chaman mein kaisa khilaa
Ye phool chaman mein kaisa khilaa
Maali ki nazar mein pyaar nahin
Hastein huye kya kya dekh liya
Ab behte hain aansoo behne do
Ya dil ki suno duniyawaalon

Ek khwaab khushi ka dekha nahin
Ek khwaab khushi ka dekha nahin
Dekha jo kabhi toh bhool gaye
Maanga hua tum kuchh de na sakey
Jo tum ne diya woh sehne do
Ya dil ki suno duniyawaalon

Kya dard kissi ka lega koi
Kya dard kissi ka lega koi
Itnaa toh kissi mein dard nahin
Behte huye aansoo aur bahein
Ab aissi tassalli rehne do

Ya dil ki suno duniyawaalon
Ya mujh ko abhi chup rehne do
Main gham ko khushi kaise keh doon
Jo kehte hain unko kehne do
Ya dil ki suno duniyawaalon

Movie: Anupama (1966)
Director: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Singer: Hemant Kumar
Lyricist: Kaifi Azmi
Music Composer: Hemant Kumar

There was a time I knew Kaifi Azmi only as Shabana Azmi’s father, but then I realized he was the lyricist for Arth and Shabana became Kaifi Azmi’s daughter! Poet Kaifi Azmi is also the one who gave us what still remains an Independence Day favourite, “Kar chale hum fida jaan-o-tan saathiyon, ab tumhare hawale watan saathiyon”. He was the writer for the film Heer Ranjha, the dialogues of which are all in verse, apparently.
Kaifi Azmi has penned some beautiful songs but I think Arth and Anupama are some of his best. This one is a personal favourite because it has the song’s music director Hemant Kumar singing as well. I don’t think Hemant Kumar’s voice matches Dharmendra but it’s a beautiful rendition nevertheless. And anything sung by Hemant Kumar always tugs at my heartstrings. Then there’s a young Dharmendra on screen in black and white and dressed in a loose kurta. There’s also a very dashing Deven Verma and a quietly emotive Shashikala on screen. A visual and aural treat! ~ R
