Dil tod ke jana hain toh phir kal hi chale jayiyo
Dil tod ke jana hain, phir kal hi chale jayiyo
Mukh mod ke jana hain, phir kal hi,
Phir kal hi, phir kal hi chale jayiyo
Dil tod ke jana hain, phir kal hi chale jayiyo ram
Dil tod ke jana hain, mukh mod ke jana hain
Koi mandir mein jaake dhundta hain devta apna
Kisi ko masjido mein mil hi jaata hain khuda apna
Magar apna abse khatir badi muskil se milta hain
Ye harjai mile toh ashiqko ke dil mein milta hain
Rulaya hum gareebon ko toh muskane laga zaalim
Jo dunia loot li dil ki toh lo jaane laga zaalim
Magar yeh yaad rahkna, yaad daman ko na chodegi
Mera dil todne wale yeh tera dil bhi todegi
Movie: Hamari Yaad Aayegi (1961)
Director: Kidar Sharma
Singers: Suman Kalyanpur
Lyricist: Kidar Sharma
Music Composer: Snehal Bhatkar
Yet again, another lyricist I had not heard of but this might be because I like listening to music from the late 1950s onwards and Kidar Nath Sharma was more prolific as a lyricist in the late 1930s and early 1940s. I qualify by saying as a writer because Sharma’s career extended from 1935 to 1965, during which period he was set painter, actor, writer, lyricist, producer, and director!

Because this is not a period I usually listen to, I haven’t heard much of his work. I looked up his filmography and found the movie Hamari Yaad Aaayegi. This song attracted me for multiple reasons. Kidar Sharma is not just the lyricist of this film, he is also its director. The young Tanuja is charming. Her male co-star is Sharma’s son, Ashok. And the song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur whose voice I really like but whom I haven’t featured enough. So, this seemed like a perfect pick to honour Sharma (12 April 1910 – 29 April 1999). ~ R
