Badi sooni sooni hain, zindagi ye zindagi

Badi sooni sooni hain, zindagi ye zindagi
Badi sooni sooni hain, zindagi ye zindagi
Main khud se hoon yahaan ajnabee, ajnabee
Badi sooni sooni hain

Kabhi ek pal bhi kahin ye udaasi
Dil mera bhule
Tabhi muskuraakar dabe pav aakar
Dukh mujhe chhoo le
Na kar mujh se gham mere dillagi ye dillagi
Badi sooni sooni hain, zindagi ye zindagi
Badi sooni sooni hain

Kabhi main na soya, kahin mujh se khoya
Kabhi main na soya, kahin mujh se khoya
Sukh mera aisse
Pata naam likhkar kahin yunhi rakhkar
Bhule koi jaise
Ajab dukh bhari hain ye bebasi, ye bebasi

Badi sooni sooni hain, zindagi ye zindagi
Main khud se hoon yahaan ajnabee, ajnabee
Badi sooni sooni hain

Movie: Mili (1975)
Director: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Singers: Kishore Kumar
Lyricist: Yogesh
Music Composer: S D Burman (associate: R D Burman)

This series on lyricists is serving the purpose of reflecting my own ignorance to me. I have enjoyed songs like Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye, Zindagi kaisi hain paheli and Rimjhim gire saawan. What I did not know however was that these songs had a common lyricist, one whose name I had not heard before — Yogesh Gaur, usually credited as Yogesh (birthday: 19 March). And now that I know his name and have been checking the songs credited to him, I realise this poet from UP had a wonderful collaboration with two Bengali directors whose work I like immensely, Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the former (Baaton Baaton Mein, Rajnigandha, Manzil, Chhoti si Baat) more than the latter (MIli, Anand).
There are some lovely romantic and sweet numbers that Yogesh has penned but when he indulges his melancholy, I think he creates magic. The song I have selected for today is a personal favourite. I love Kishore Kumar’s voice here and the lyrics, I think, are beautiful. The image in these lines for instance: “Kabhi ek pal bhi kahin ye udaasi / Dil mera bhule / Tabhi muskuraakar dabe pav aakar / Dukh mujhe chhoo le” A tad self-pitying? Probably, but when set to music by the Burmans and sung soulfully by Kishoreda, I feel justified in the indulgence. ~ R
