Kuch dil ne kaha

Kuch dil ne kaha
Kuch bhi nahin
Kuch dil ne suna
Kuch bhi nahin

Aisi bhi baatein hoti hain
Aisi bhi baatein hoti hain
Kuch dil ne kaha
Kuch bhi nahin

Leta hain dil angdaaiya, iss dil ko samjhaaye koi
Armaan na aankhen khol de, ruswa na ho jaaye koi
Palkon ki thandi sej par, sapnon ki pariyaan soti hain
Aisi bhi baaten hoti hain
Aisi bhi baaten hoti hain
Kuch dil ne kaha
Kuch bhi nahin

Dil ki tasalli ke liye, jhuthhi chamak jhuthha nikhaar
Jeevan toh soona hi raha, sab samjhe aayi hain bahaar
Kaliyon se koi puchhta, hansti hain woh ya rothi hain
Aisi bhi baatein hoti hain
Aisi bhi baaten hoti hain
Kuch dil ne kaha
Kuch bhi nahin
Kuch dil ne suna
Kuch bhi nahin

Movie: Anupama (1966)
Director: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar
Lyricist: Kaifi Azmi
Music Composer: Hemant Kumar

Sharmila Tagore was not necessarily an actress whose films I sought out, but she is in so many movies I like and has had so many lovely songs featured on her. As a result, picking a favourite was difficult. A strong contender was Mausam’s “Ruke ruke se kadam,” which has lyrics by the amazing Gulzar. Mausam won Sharmila Tagore a National Award.
This one won out for me today because I love the quality of Hemant Kumar’s music here. There’s such a lovely gentleness to this song that it is almost haunting. And he uses pauses and silences so effectively. It seems so perfectly picturised in a pine forest with the mist not too far away.
Sharmila Tagore has aged gracefully, and I like her more as an older actress. I hope she continues to enjoy health and happiness. Wishing her a very happy birthday (8 December)! ~ R
