Tu mera chaand

Tu mera chaand, main teri chaandni
Main tera raag, tu meri raagini
Tu mera chaand, main teri chaandni
Main tera raag, tu meri raagini

Nahin dil ka lagaana koi dillagi, koi dillagi
Nahin dil ka lagaana koi dillagi, koi dillagi

Saath hi jeena saath hi marna
Ulfat ki hain reet haan ulfat ki hain reet
Saath hi jeena saath hi marna
Ulfat ki hain reet haan ulfat ki hain reet

Pyaar ki murali hardam gaaye teri lagan ke geet
Pyaar ki murali hardam gaaye teri lagan ke geet
Main tera raag, tu meri raagini

Tu mera chaand, main teri chaandni

Nahin dil ka lagaana koi dillagi, koi dillagi

Bhool na jaana rut ye suhaani
Ye din aur ye raat haan ye din aur ye raat
Bhool na jaana rut ye suhaani
Ye din aur ye raat haan ye din aur ye raat

Jab tak chamke chaand sitaaren dekho chhute na saath
Jab tak chamke chaand sitaaren dekho chhute na saath

Tu mera chaand, main teri chaandni

Main tera raag, tu meri raagini

Nahin dil ka lagaana koi dillagi, koi dillagi

Movie: Dillagi (1949)
Director: Abdul Rashid Kardar
Singers: Shyam, Suraiya
Lyricist: Shakeel Badayuni
Music Composer: Naushad

Suraiya was born on June 15, 1929. She was a playback singer and an actress, hugely successful in both fields, so much so that her films drew crowds that necessitated police presence. In fact, Wikipedia tells us that she stopped attending the premieres of her movies after she was nearly mobbed at one.
However, she reigned on the silver screen during the 1940s and 1950s, a period I have not been very interested in. So, I know little about her films or her songs. So, I listened to a few of her songs before I picked this one, where she sings and acts. It is obviously a scene from a very different age where the hero and heroine maintain a decorous distance and the entire song is rendered within a tiny space. I find the romance a little difficult to buy into, I must confess but Suraiya’s skill is evident. Remembering her on the anniversary of her birthday. ~ R
