Saiyan dil mein aana re
Aake phir na jaana re
O aake phir na jaana re
Chham chhama chham chham
Raaja banke aana re
Mohe lekke jaana re
O mohe lekke jaana re
Chham chhama chham chham
Chaandni raat hogi, taaronki baaraat hogi
Chaandni raat hogi, taaronki baaraat hogi
Pehle pehle pyaar ki pehli pehli baat hogi
Pehle pehle pyaar ki pehli pehli baat hogi
Khushi khushi gaayenge hum geet suhaana re
Saiyan dil mein aana re
Aake phir na jaana re
O aake phir na jaana re
Chham chhama chham chham
Thodi thodi chhed hogi, thoda thoda pyaar hoga
Thodi thodi chhed hogi, thoda thoda pyaar hoga
Kabhi iqraar hoga, kabhi inkaar hoga
Kabhi iqraar hoga, kabhi inkaar hoga
Tera manaana, mera rooth jaana re
Saiyan dil mein aana re
Aake phir na jaana re
O aake phir na jaana re
Chham chhama chham chham
Tum mere paas hoge gham badi door hoga
Tum mere paas hoge gham badi door hoga
Kehta hain jiya mera hoga, zaroor hoga
Kehta hain jiya mera hoga, zaroor hoga
Laana re laana, tashreef laana re
Saiyan dil mein aana re
Aake phir na jaana re
O aake phir na jaana re
Chham chhama chham chham
Raaja banke aana re
Mohe lekke jaana re
O mohe lekke jaana re
Chham chhama chham chham
Movie: Bahar (1951)
Director: M V Raman
Singers: Shamshad Begum
Lyricist: Rajendra Krishan
Music Composer: S D Burman
It was difficult to pick one song to commemorate Shamshad Begum’s birth anniversary (April 14). There’s “Leke pehla pehla pyaar,” there’s “Kabhi aar kabhi paar,” there’s “Kajra mohabbatwala,” a delightful, mischievous song with Asha Bhosle, and more. All of them are much loved. I picked this after seeing the video. I had only heard the song before I went looking for the video as I was deciding which of Shamshad Begum’s songs to feature this week. Imagine my surprise when I saw a very young Vyjayanthimala. This is the Madhumati star younger than I have ever seen her. That’s because this was her Bollywood debut film!

I will acknowledge that I found the playback incongruous with the onscreen face. Shamshad Begum has an adorable, slightly nasal voice that I absolutely love, but it does not seem appropriate to Vyjayanthimala. Be that as it may, I think this still is a wonderful song, beautifully rendered by Shamshad Begum and enthusiastically portrayed by Vyjayanthimala. ~ R
