Bechara dil kya kare

Bechara dil kya kare
Arre, bechara dil kya kare
Saawan jale, bhado jale
Saawan jale, bhado jale

Do pal ki raah nahin
Ho, do pal ki raah nahin
Ikk pal ruke, ikk pal chale
Ikk pal ruke, ikk pal chale

Gaao gaao mein ghoome re jogi
Rogi changge kare
Mere hi mann ka taap na jane
Haath na dhare

Bechara dil kya kare
Arre, bechara dil kya kare
Saawan jale, bhado jale
Saawan jale, bhado jale

Tere waaste lakhon raaste
Tu jahan bhi chale
Mere liye hain teri hi rahein
Tu jo sath le

Bechara dil kya kare
Arre, bechara dil kya kare
Saawan jale, bhado jale
Saawan jale, bhado jale

Do pal ki raah nahin
Ho, do pal ki raah nahin
Ikk pal ruke, ikk pal chale
Ikk pal ruke, ikk pal chale

Wow, this I did not know. I have heard the oft-repeated story of how Rajesh Khanna got into movies via a talent hunt. What I did not know was that the other finalist in that talent hunt was Farida Jalal, who went on to star with him in Aradhana. But while Rajesh Khanna became the reigning heartthrob, Farida Jalal became every hero’s favorite sister and later every hero’s beloved mother or grandmother. Some of the songs picturized on this four-time Filmfare Award winning actress are terrible (Check out Ik chhori hain, gori gori hain from Lagan, which is particularly traumatizing). But there are lovely songs too: Baghon mein bahaar hain from Aradhana, Dekh sakta hoon main from Majboor. But this is the one I picked because it has a beautiful Farida Jalal, simply attired, with only her lovely smile as an accessory, and Asha Bhosle lending her voice to this gently teasing song even better. March 14 is Farida Jalal’s 70th birthday. Wishing her health and happiness. ~ R
