Mera salaam le ja…
Mera salaam le ja,
Dil ka payaam le ja,
Ulfat ka jaam le ja,
Udan khatole vaale rahi
Udan khatole vaale rahi
Oye… mera salaam le ja,
Dil ka payaam le ja,
Ulfat kaa jaam le ja,
Udan khatole vaale rahi
Udan khatole vaale rahi
Udta hawaon mein,
Baadal ke chhao mein,
Kaun se gaao mein, jaayega tu
Udta hawaon mein,
Baadal ke chhao mein,
Kaun se gaao mein, jaayega tu
Neeche zameen hain,
Duniya haseen hain,
Dil ko yakeen hain, aayega tu
Neeche zameen hain,
Duniya haseen hain,
Dil ko yakeen hain, aayega tu
Oye, mera salaam le ja,
Dil ka payaam le ja,
Ulfat kaa jaam le ja,
Udan khatole vaale rahi
Udan khatole vaale rahi
Oonchi udaan hain,
Palkon pe jaan hain,
Aage toofan hain, jaa na kahin
Oonchi udaan hain,
Palkon pe jaan hain,
Aage toofan hain, jaa na kahin
Manzil bhi door hain,
Himmat bhi choor hain,
Aana jaroor hain, aaja yahin
Manzil bhi door hain,
Himmat bhi choor hain,
Aana jaroor hain, aaja yahin
Oye, mera salaam le ja,
Dil ka payaam le ja,
Ulfat kaa jaam le ja,
Udan khatole vaale rahi
Udan khatole vaale rahi
Udan khatole vale rahi aaja…
O rahi aaja…

Today is the birth anniversary of actress Nimmi. This is among one of her most famous songs. Wikipedia has such tales to tell about Nimmi, none of which I knew. She must have led an interesting life. She apparently made her debut at 16 in Raj Kapoor’s Barsaat and nearly stole Nargis’ thunder. She did the same thing to Nadira in Aan, where her character (Mangala) became so popular that the film was released as Mangala, a Girl from India in France. This movie pairs her with Dilip Kumar with whom she starred in five films. The movie has Wonder Woman overtones. Nimmi who plays Soni in the film is a citizen of a kingdom ruled by women. And it is into this kingdom that the charming young Kashi (Dilip Kumar) arrives via a plane crash (suspiciously, immediately after Soni asks the udan khatole vale rahi to aaja). However, she has competition in the form of the queen of the kingdom and the tussle for the marooned traveller’s affections is what keeps audiences occupied until the happily ever after. A lovely song, delightfully rendered off-screen by Lata Mangeshkar and on-screen by Nimmi. Happy birthday, Nimmiji. ~ R
