Jaa re jaa re ud jaa re panchhi

Jaa re, jaa re ud jaa re panchhi
Bahaaron ke desh jaa re,
Yahaan kya hai mere pyaare
Ke ujad gayi bagiyaa mere man ki

Jaa re, jaa re ud jaa re panchhi
Bahaaron ke desh jaa re,
Yahaan kya hai mere pyaare
Ke ujad gayi bagiyaa mere man ki
Jaa re…

Na daali rahi na kali,
Ajab gam ki aandhi chali
Udi dukh ki dhool raahon mein
Na daali rahi na kali,
Ajab gam ki aandhi chali
Udi dukh ki dhool raahon mein

Jaa re, ye gali hai birhan ki,
Bahaaron ke desh jaa re,
Yahaan kya hai mere pyaare
Ke ujad gayi bagiyaa mere man ki
Jaa re…

Main beena uthha na saki,
Tere sang gaa na saki
Dhale mere geet aahon mein
Main beena uthha na saki,
Tere sang gaa na saki
Dhale mere geet aahon mein

Ja re, ye gali hai ansuan ki,
Bahaaron ke desh jaa re,
Yahaan kya hai mere pyaare
Ke ujad gayi bagiyaa mere man ki

Jaa re, jaa re ud jaa re panchhi
Bahaaron ke desh jaa re,
Yahaan kya hai mere pyaare
Ke ujad gayi bagiyaa mere man ki
Jaa re…

Movie: Maya (1961)

Director: D.D. Kashyap

Singers: Lata Mangeshkar

Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Music Composer: Salil Chowdhury

This is another song that I first heard when I was a child. Until I fully understood it, this seemed joyful because I thought someone was letting a bird free. However, it is quite the opposite—the singer is bound by some sad circumstance and is parting with someone.
I used to think the lyrics enamoured me, but all except the third and fifth stanzas are the same. So, obviously, Salil Chowdhary and Lata Mangeshkar have worked their magic to make this song memorable.
Now, I am reminded of this song whenever one of my animal friends die, probably because my mother tries to reassure me that their death frees them of this sad, cruel world! ~ S
