Tumko dekha toh

Tumko dekha toh ye khayal aaya
Zindagi dhoop, tum ghana saaya

Tumko dekha toh ye khayal aaya
Tumko dekha toh ye khayal aaya
Zindagi dhoop, tum ghana saaya
Tumko dekha toh ye khayal aaya

Aaj phir dil ne ik tamanaa ki
Aaj phir dil ne ik tamanaa ki
Aaj phir dil ko humne samjhaaya
Aaj phir dil ko humne samjhaaya
Zindagi dhoop, tum ghana saaya
Tumko dekha toh ye khayal aaya

Tum chale jaoge toh sochenge
Tum chale jaoge toh sochenge
Humne kya khoya, humne kya paaya
Humne kya khoya, humne kya paaya
Zindagi dhoop, tum ghana saaya
Tumko dekha toh ye khayal aaya

Hum jisse gungunaa nahin sakte
Hum jisse gungunaa nahin sakte
Waqt ne aisa geet kyun gaaya
Waqt ne aisa geet kyun gaaya
Zindagi dhoop, tum ghana saaya
Tumko dekha toh ye khayal aaya
Tumko dekha toh ye khayal aaya

Regardless of your views on Valentine’s Day, it’s difficult to ignore. So, here I am, thinking about love. And this song just pops into my head. It’s simple and beautiful. There is a sense of amazement at the great good fortune that has brought this event to pass. It is, however, shadowed by a sense of doom, a belief that this is too good to last. I do like Javed Akhtar’s lyrics.

I am not a ghazal fan, and I am not sure that will change anytime soon, but if I were, I would want to hear Jagjit Singh above all. His husky, unhurried rendition here is just dreamy. Chitra Singh comes in only in the beginning for some beautiful humming that makes for a delightful start.

The late Farooq Sheikh and the lovely Deepti Naval make a very believable couple. This is an endearing love song, in spite of it its seeming pessimism. ~ R
