Chookar mere mann ko

Chookar mere mann ko kiya tune kya ishaara

Chookar mere mann ko kiya tune kya ishaara
Badla ye mausam, lage pyaara jag saara
Chookar mere mann ko kiya tune kya ishaara
Badla ye mausam, lage pyaara jag saara
Chookar mere mann ko kiya tune kya ishaara

Tu jo kahe jeevan bhar tere liye main gaoon
Tere liye main gaoon
Geet tere bolon pe likhta chala jaoon
Likhta chala jaoon
Mere geeton mein tujhe dhoonde jag saara

Chookar mere mann ko kiya tune kya ishaara
Badla ye mausam, lage pyaara jag saara
Chookar mere mann ko kiya tune kya ishaara

Aaja tera aanchal yeh pyaar se main bhar doon
Pyaar se main bhar doon
Khushiyaan jahan bhar ki tujhko nazar kar doon
Tujhko nazar kar doon
Tu hi mera jeevan tu hi jeene ka sahaara

Chookar mere mann ko kiya tune kya ishaara
Badla ye mausam, lage pyaara jag saara
Chookar mere mann ko kiya tune kya ishaara

This is one of the few (only?) songs for which I know all the words. That’s probably one of the reasons it is also one of my most frequently hummed numbers. It’s short and simple but it says everything it needs to say. The second stanza, ‘Tu jo kahe…’ pays tribute to the context (of a singer being taught to be a performer) and the next one to the idea of love. Together, the whole thing makes perfect sense. The repetition of the last bit of each line also seems plausible, since they are in a large, empty auditorium where words might echo. Of course, the song is also beautifully rendered by Kishore Kumar, which makes it more endearing. ~ R
