Hazaar rahein

M: Hazaar rahein mudke dekhi
Kahin se koi sadaa na aayi
F: Badi wafa se nibhayi tumne
Hamari thodisi bewafaii

M: Jahaan se tum mod mudd gaye the
Jahaan se tum mod mudd gaye the
Yeh mod abhi wahin pade hain
F: Hum apne pairon mein jaane kitne
Hum apne pairon mein jaane kitne
Bhanwar lapete hue khade hain

F: Badi wafa se nibhayi tumne
Hamari thodisi bewafaii

M: Kahin kisi roz yun bhi hota
Kahin kisi roz yun bhi hota
Hamari halat tumhari hoti
F: Jo raatein humne guzaari marke
Jo raatein humne guzaari marke
Woh raatein tumne guzaari hoti

F: Badi wafa se nibhayi tumne
Hamari thodisi bewafaii

M: Tumhein yeh zidd thi ke hum bulate
Humein yeh umeed woh pukare
F: Hain naam hoton pe abhi lekin
Awaaz mein pad gayi daraare

M: Hazaar rahein mudke dekhi
Kahin se koi sadaa na aayi
F: Badi wafa se nibhayi tumne
Hamari thodisi bewafaii
Hamari thodisi bewafaii

I was reminded of this song by yet another illustrious birthday. Gulzar celebrated his birthday on 18 August. I have long admired Gulzar for his skill with words. This is one of the earliest songs I identified as his (because when I first learnt to love this genre of music I wasn’t paying attention to the people responsible, just enjoying the songs) and grew to admire for its poetry.
His figures of speech give me goosebumps at times. Is there a better lyrical rendition of the assumptions and expectations that plague relationships? The dialogue style is so apt for this piece, which is why in a little deviation from norm I have indicated M and F for the male and female parts. The lines repeated through the song translate (rather more palely than its original Hindi version): You have kept faith with such devotion to my little unfaithfulness. The inability to forgive and forget was probably never so beautifully put.
Gulzar won the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award for this song, while Kishore Kumar won the Best Playback Singer Award for it.
Gulzar is both complex and easy to comprehend or maybe the reality is that his work is more onion-like, with each listening illuminating a newer layer of meaning. May his pen ever produce gems. ~ R
