Chalte chalte

Chalte chalte, chalte chalte
Yunhi koi mil gaya tha
Yunhi koi mil gaya tha
Sar-e raah chalte chalte
Sar-e raah chalte chalte
Wahi thamke reh gayi hai
Wahi thamke reh gayi hai
Meri raat dhalte dhalte
Meri raat dhalte dhalte

Jo kahi gayi na mujhse
Jo kahi gayi na mujhse
Woh zamaana keh raha hai
Woh zamaana keh raha hai

Ke fasaana...

Ke fasaana ban gayi hai
Ke fasaana ban gayi hai
Meri baat chalte chalte
Meri baat chalte chalte
Yunhi koi mil gaya tha
Yunhi koi mil gaya tha
Sar-e raah chalte chalte
Sar-e raah chalte chalte

Yunhi koi... mil gaya tha
Sar-e raah chalte chalte, chalte chalte
Sar-e raah chalte chalte, chalte chalte

Chalte chalte, chalte chalte

Chalte chalte, chalte chalte

Chalte chalte, chalte chalte

Chalte chalte, chalte chalte
Yunhi koi mil gaya tha
Yunhi koi mil gaya tha

Shab-e-intezaar aakhir
Shab-e-intezaar aakhir
Kabhi hogi muktasar bhi
Kabhi hogi muktasar bhi

Yeh chiraag...

Yeh chiraag bujh rahe hain
Yeh chiraag bujh rahe hain
Mere saath jalte jalte
Mere saath jalte jalte
Yeh chirag bujh rahe hain
Yeh chirag bujh rahe hain
Yeh chirag bujh rahe hain
Yeh chirag bujh rahe hain
Yeh chirag bujh rahe hain
Yeh chirag bujh rahe hain
Mere saath jalte jalte
Mere saath jalte jalte

(Train whistle...)

Movie : Pakeezah (1971)

Director: Kamal Amrohi

Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

Lyricist: Kaifi Azmi

Music Composer: Naushad, Gulam Mohammad

Pakeezah is the only film I bunked class to watch. [It was a Hindi special class; the logic I employed was that this was a Hindi film anyway :) ] I watched it at home. Although my parents and brother were away, I had told them I would be doing this. So, no drama and no thrill in the bunking itself.
As for the song, the lyrics consist of a few lines repeated more than once. However, I marvel at Lata Mangeshkar singing each repetition differently. The song reminds me of train travel because of its rhythm and the whistle at the end. I remember the ‘Aapke paon dekhe, bahut haseen hain / Inhe zameen par mat utariyega, maile ho jayenge’ dialogue rendered by Raaj Kumar, in a train scene in the film.
The last few lines of the song make me think of Meena Kumari, whose life ended prematurely, and Pakeezah reminds me of The Pirate by Vincente Minelli. Just as Minelli had troubles with his wife, Judy Garland, during the production of the movie, Amrohi faced various problems involving his wife, Meena Kumari, during the shooting of Pakeezah. ~ S
